Tools for Brainstorming
There is 1000s of Tools for Notes, Ideation, Brainstorming etc. but which one is the best one?
The best tool is the one you’ll actually use.
Here’s a list of some of the tools I use or have used!
For Quick Thoughts
When the idea just needs to land somewhere before it disappears:
Apple Notes or Raycast Notes
Fast, minimal, always a shortcut away. No folders. No friction. Just thought → text.Lately, I found myself using Raycast Notes more because they are so accessible as the Raycast shortcut became second nature to me!
Only downside is that I’m limited to 5 Notes on the Free plan!Messaging myself
Yep. I literally send myself messages on WhatsApp or Messenger. Sometimes a sentence. Sometimes a voice note. Sometimes full on breakdowns of ideas.
(If you're more serious about voice notes: check out AudioNotes.)
For Bigger Brainstorms & Systems
Once an idea grows legs and starts asking questions:
Notion - notion.com
My go-to for building systems, planning out features, or structuring anything with moving parts.
It’s way easier to sort, move, and organize in Notion than anywhere else.Kosmik - kosmik.app
A recent favorite. It’s an infinite canvas that supports videos, articles, PDFs, and even has AI summaries. Watch the Video Walkthrough we recently shared here
The built-in browser means you never have to leave the space to research, explore, and build in context. Zero tabs. Maximum focus.
For Visual + Collaborative Thinking
Sometimes ideas are too abstract or messy for text:
(Recent go-to) Excalidraw - excalidraw.com
Super lightweight, perfect for flowcharts, mind maps, and sketch-style notes.
I love their community-driven libraries, which are filled with assets to use in your notes. They truly make brainstorming and planning ideas seamless.
Amazing for fast solo thinking or collaborative sessions which I’ve found myself to be doing lately!Miro - miro.com
Feature-rich whiteboard for teams. Great when you need templates or to map out more structured ideas visually. Best for Bigger teams!FigJam - figma.com/figjam
If you’re in the design world, FigJam makes idea sketching fun. Sticky notes, freeform layouts, and built-in playful elements make it feel less like work and more like creative play.
For Talking Ideas Out
When it’s easier to say it than write it:
HoldSpeak - holdspeak.com
I talk out a rough thought, get it transcribed, and let GPT (or any LLM) clean it up or expand on it.
You might be asking, don't Macs come with built-in Dictation?
They do, but I often ramble or speak unclearly. Tools like HoldSpeak use AI to improve audio quality and transcribe your words and thoughts more clearly.
If you’re as lazy as me to type out big ideas, you would love this!
and I honestly love that its an affordable one-time payment app - no need to worry about adding another subscription
Where the Ideas Come From?
I don’t always sit down with a blank page. Most ideas come while walking, scrolling, or reading—sometimes from an article on TechCrunch, Wired, or random corners of the internet.
Lately, one thing that’s been working really well is heading to Toolfolio’s Inspiration → Design section, opening a bunch of libraries, and just scrolling.
Something about seeing patterns, UI, and smart little details—it gets the juices flowing fast.
Final Thought
The best tool is the one you’ll actually use.
But having a reliable stack makes it way easier to stay in motion—whether that’s catching sparks, building out systems, or bouncing ideas with others.
If you’ve got a weird workflow or favorite tool I haven’t mentioned, reply and tell me. I’m always testing out new tools and I’m also genuinely curious what apps people are using nowadays for collecting their ideas and thoughts!
